The Writer’s Wheel 6/11/19: The Draw of Romance
A lot of readers read romance for the entertainment. Learning about new settings. Digging into the past and seeing how our ancestors lived and loved. Taking an adventure when you’re life seems so ho-hum. Attempting to forget what’s going on in your day-to-day-life. Bills. Grief. Trauma. Illness. A good story sometimes takes you far away and breathes hope into you. If this couple can make it through, maybe some of that luck can follow you through into your own life.
You know the couple is going to live happily-ever-after or happily-ever-for-now in certain categories. Not too many books now-a-days have a positive ending. Sometimes even the protagonist dies. Romance continues the tradition of bringing the couple together for the long haul. Families grow. Lives change. People open up. It puts the reader in a good mood and as above, gives you that positive vibe to tackle things again when you’ve been beaten down.
We can go across the world. Enter our own backyard. Take a cruise. Drive across the border. A lot of readers get to enjoy settings they may never be able to enjoy on their own. There are even new worlds, time travel, space offerings. Let’s face it, it’s nice to visit a new place, see a new people, new species. We like to learn, to explore. What safer way to do that than in a book? You can go to another galaxy and see what it has to offer.
Family and Love.
Romance books re-enforce our values. We forgive and forget our family members for things that have happened. It’s nice to draw together and live out your lives together. Of course, not suggesting someone that’s been abusive should be in your life. I’m talking about old arguments, misunderstandings. Your parents and siblings, other relatives won’t be around forever. Shouldn’t you make the attempt if their halfway decent?
Love, of course, is the main draw. People like to root for the couple. It helps us draw closer to our own families, our own spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend. Love helps us to get through life. Counting on each other is a way of survival, a way to encourage each other’s dreams and hopes.
So, what draws you to romance?
Have a great day, take care, God bless!
